Mayday, Man Down.

Well, I have my first official injury.  At the very least, a badge f honor?  I would rather do with out it, though.  I developed a somewhat intense pain in my left ankle and calf muscle a week ago and thought that this pain was due to old running shoes.  Then, I took a break from running for 4 days and purchased a nice new pair of Brooks.  I hit the barely traveled roads around my home in New Hampshire and ran for some time.  As I entered mile 7, I started feeling the same pain again and had to limp over half a mile back to the house.  Since then, I have had a limp when walking and have had some serious pain in my left leg.  Turns out I have ankle bursitis.

The bursa is a sack filled with fluid located between some bones in your ankle and your Achilles tendon.  Right now, this sack is very swollen and inflamed and must heal.  The number one step in this is icing, taking anti-inflamatories and… not running for a long time.  Not running? What?  How is that possible?  Damn, damn and damn.

The doctors said that I will acquire permanent damage if I attempt to run and do not allow for an appropriate time of healing.  That means the marathon on August 19th is out the window and I will not be able to time qualify for the 2013 Boston Marathon.  I am also not too sure about what will happen now with the opportunity of being featured in the previously mentioned national television program.

Fine.  I will enter by running for charity again.  I will be at that marathon no matter what happens and nothing will stop me.  For now, I will continue training with weights to strengthen my core and arms.  I will have to utilize a bench so that I put no pressure on my injured foot.  I hope to follow up with a specialist to earn more about how this has happened and what I can change to avoid this issue from developing again in the future.  Something like this can not happen again.

Oh I am so very sorry to hear about your injury! This post has been a little while so I am hoping that you are recovering. I am blind and doing my first marathon in about two weeks! Would love to qualify for the Boston Marathon.
